Choose the right maintenance schedule

Mazda's 2015 US MX-5 maintenance document distinguishes normal service from operating conditions requiring a different schedule. The examples below apply to that document. Confirm the correct schedule for your own model year and market.

Under Schedule 1, engine oil and filter are due every 7,500 miles or six months, whichever comes first; spark plugs are due at 75,000 miles. Under the US Schedule 2, oil and filter become 5,000 miles or four months, and spark plugs 60,000 miles.

The document lists conditions such as repeated short trips, dusty roads, extended idling, and extreme heat among the reasons to consult Schedule 2. Use the complete applicability list rather than deciding solely from annual mileage.

Remember the calendar

For FL22 coolant, the same document gives an initial replacement interval of 120,000 miles or 10 years, then 60,000 miles or five years. Verify the coolant specification and recorded service date; a different coolant has a different schedule.

A low odometer reading does not show whether calendar-based work was completed. Build a record from invoices, dates, and mileage. Where evidence is missing, write “unknown” and ask the shop how to establish a sensible baseline.

Keep evidence of the actual work, not just a reminder that you intended to do it. A service calendar is useful only when you can connect each completed entry to what was fitted or replaced.

Separate maintenance from upgrades

Before allocating money to suspension or wheels, collect written estimates for the baseline work. Group scheduled service, inspection-led repairs, and discretionary changes separately.

For each quote, ask which parts and fluids it includes, how labor is calculated, and what could change after further inspection. Do not treat a parts-only price as the installed total. Avoid assuming that a job costs the same on every transmission or configuration.

Use the budget planner to assemble your own figures. The reserve is money you choose to leave available; it is not a prediction that the car will need repairs of that value.

Keep a record you can hand over

A useful service log should make sense to the next shop or owner without you explaining every entry. Include the VIN or vehicle identifier, date, mileage, work performed, invoice, and next review point. Keep modification records alongside the maintenance history.

Revisit the plan when your use changes. A car moving from occasional weekend trips to frequent short commutes may need its operating conditions assessed again.
